The Bodo Sperlein Eclipse Mirror

Launched at Maison & Objet, Paris, 7th – 11th September 2007.

In an exciting new venture, internationally renowned product designer Bodo Sperlein has created an intriguing design that capitalises on the inspiring versatility of DuPont™ Corian® together with the sophisticated shimmer of Swarovski crystals. This visionary combination has resulted in Eclipse, an illuminated circular wall mirror as alluring as its name suggests.

Eclipse is over one metre in diameter and features a hemispheric frame made from
thermoformed DuPont™ Corian® in pure Glacier White, set with approximately 500 Swarovski crystals. Exploiting the ethereal translucency of Corian®, the mirror is internally lit with a new generation Phillips T5 circular florescent lamp, an eco friendly light source that emits a beautiful, warm luminescence.

Bodo Sperlein has only begun to explore the design potential of DuPont™ Corian®, envisioning how well the material would work with Swarovski crystals and other hi-spec materials and technologies. Drawn initially by the flexibility and sleek, tactile nature of DuPont™ Corian®, he foresees a vista of future creative possibilities.

“I wanted to cast some magic …and this comes in the form of a dazzling and theatrical display of refracted light playing across a semi-translucent, glacier-white surface, which in turn creates a subtle yet tantalising glow, while the Swarovski clusters add an enchanting sensation of sparkling glamour to the piece. Modern yet classic, with a lunar-esque touch, this wall mounted spectacle could be the highlight of any design-conscious environment, conjuring a spell-binding, sublime, mysterious ambience. I can envision it adorning the wall of a Hollywood Boudoir, a boutique design hotel or a chic salon. Corian® and Swarovski crystals work beautifully together and I have been delighted by the skilled craftsmanship of the fabricators, Cutting Edge, in turning my vision into reality.”

The Eclipse mirror was unveiled for the first time at the Bodo Sperlein stand at Maison et Objet (www.maison-objet.com) in Paris in September 2007.
